The VanCleves came to us with a vision of building in a sustainable way. They also wanted to act as their own contractor, and loved the idea of building with straw bales.  We designed the home to reflect the older homes in the area, with a level of finish that belies the low-tech method of construction.

They incorporated many energy saving features, including a ground source heat pump, to compliment the super insulated envelope. The metal roof, mill-end wood floors, and wool carpeting were some of the earth-friendly finishes used.  A built-in display cabinet at the front entry makes good use of space under the staircase, and deep curved window jambs reflect light and frame window seats throughout the home.

This home was the site of our first straw bale construction workshop, leading the way to many more.
