One of the most delightful aspects of building from a custom design is making the most of the gifts of your site. These gifts include sun, wind, water, vegetation, slopes, and views. You might think of these as Fruit on the Ground, even easier to reach than Low Hanging Fruit!
One of our favorite ways to add value is with Passive Solar design. This works by placing windows to the south with proper shading to help heat your home in the winter while shading the summer’s rays. Deciduous vines on a trellis are a great way to provide the shading, since they let spring sun in while protecting you in the fall.
Passive cooling uses natural breezes directed through properly located windows (and sometimes operable skylights) so nature and convection do the work. Similar discussions can be had about all other gifts of the site. When used to guide the design, they can all add value and a variety of food for the soul.
