Energy Efficiency and Indoor Air Quality are big considerations for our clients. They understand the importance of these features, and yet sometimes hesitate when it comes to commitment. Often their biggest concern is that it will cost more. But that’s not always the case – synergy is the key. Let’s consider your energy efficiency choices.
The definition of Synergy is when the total is greater than the sum of the parts. Integrated design considers how things interact and support each other so a project maintains a higher value into the future without costing more to build. For example, more insulation and smart landscaping can be offset by a smaller mechanical system.
Power generation equipment sizing is another good example. Solar panels are becoming more popular, and we have used them on several projects. But they are expensive pieces of equipment, and putting solar panels on an energy inefficient home is akin to putting a new motor on a leaking boat – wouldn’t you fix the leak first? Dedicate 15% of your budget to energy upgrades when remodeling, and you can use the savings to install the equipment in a few years.
These are just a couple ways we can help you move past thinking in terms of adding or changing out one material for another, into the integrated relationships between systems. It’s easy to choose a more sustainable material to install, and that can cost more. Integrated design takes a little more time and thought, but will give you big payoffs in the long term.
