We practice many aspects of ‘Future-Proofing’ at Living Shelter. One way is through design for Aging in Place, allowing our clients to stay in their own homes even when physical limitations occur. These ‘Homes for a Lifetime’ are comfortable, flexible, and will hold a higher market value as baby-boomers grow into their 70’s.

Another way we practice ‘Future-Proofing’ is by helping you make smart Energy Efficiency and Healthy Material choices while creating a delightful, well planned home you will love to live in. Your home is your sanctuary, and beauty, health and comfort should dwell there with you.

Perhaps sustainable living is important to you, which is a third ‘Future-Proofing’ concern. Smaller homes are a good choice for this, as quite simply, using less material makes less of an impact on the environment. And as Sarah Susanka outlines in her popular Not So Big House philosophy, a well designed smaller home can feel more spacious than a poorly designed larger one, and Living Shelter is known for achieving this.

You make so many choices when you decide to build or remodel. Spending some time considering the options can save you money now and well into the future. We have lots of experience guiding our clients through this process, so let us know what you’d like to accomplish and we’ll be there to help!

‘Future Proofing’ is a term coined by Dave Porter of Porterworks, who taught the Certified Aging in Place course we completed at the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties. We thought it was such a good term that we have adopted it into our messaging to those who are interested in combining resilient and universal design.
